Augmented Reality Sandbox

Augmented Reality Sandbox

Allegheny College was featured in Pittsburgh Magazine earlier this year for the construction of an augmented reality sandbox. The project utilizes a Kinect 3D camera to capture depth data in the sandbox. That data is processed by the simulation software to produce an image representing the topography of the sand surface and a fluid simulation of virtual water. The image is relayed to a projector that casts the image onto the sand and updates in real time. Construction of the sandbox was a collaborative effort involving the departments of geology, environmental science, and computer science.
