Swallowtail

Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Isaiah 34:7
In this research project, we are investigating the hypothesis that StraightforWard benchmArks pLus reaL applicatiOns equAls meanIngful resuLts (SWALLOwtAIL). In particular, we focus on the implementation of simple performance evaluation frameworks for remote communication primitives (e.g., sockets and XML-RPC) and storage mechanisms (e.g., XML compression and Java serialization). The frameworks enable us to evaluate the performance of these key components within modern software applications. After conducting empirical studies with the benchmarking frameworks, we use advanced statistical analysis techniques in order to better understand the trade-offs in efficiency and effectiveness. We anticipate that others may use these benchmarking frameworks to make intelligent choices about storage and communication primitives and subsequently avoid degrading the performance and/or correctness of programs.
