Faculty members and students in the Department of Computer Science lead
robotics and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
outreach activities through workshops and presentations in the Crawford
Central schools. Additionally, students and faculty sponsor public events
featuring hands-on interactions with cutting-edge mathematics, computer
technology, and introductory concepts in computer science.
The robotics outreach introduces elementary school students to
problem solving and computational thinking through interaction with
robots. Some of these events include:
- Giving robotics-based presentations and demonstrations to the
6th graders in the First District Elementary School
- Teaching a robotics class in the Second District Elementary
School designed to reinforce concepts in the kindergarten
mathematics curriculum
- Organizing interactive robotics sessions that encourage
family-friendly reading and mathematical and scientific literacy
The STEM outreach introduces elementary, middle-, and high-school
students and teachers to the enthralling field of computer science.
Some of these events include:
- Developing and deploying mobile apps for use by elementary and
middle school students participating in Creek Connections
- Using the Scratch programming language to interactively teach
computer-based geometry to Cochranton Elementary School
students
- Advising middle- and high-school teachers in the selection of
textbooks and the development of classroom activities for
technology-related courses
